about

This song is inspired by, and written with, my dear daughters Alexandra and Robin. When they were just wee pups, we had a favorite rest stop at a lake on our road trips to visit family. One trip was in deep winter, and the kids called out “Let’s stop at Silver Lake”, and of course we agreed. There was lots of snow and ice, but luckily we could make it in to the spot where they had their favorite tree, and best view of the lake.

When they got out of the car they looked really confused. They were all excited to visit their fave spot, and this was a totally unfamiliar and baffling view with all snow, and the lake frozen up. “This isn’t Silver Lake.” said Alex. It took a major leap of faith for them to believe us when we explained that this was indeed our special place, but it looked entirely different in winter. When i scuttled over to their favorite tree, and brushed the snow and ice off if it, they finally believed us.

The next morning i woke to this hauntingly beautiful little voice singing. I scrambled out of bed to try to find a pen and paper, and i at least captured the final bits of Alex singing: “I’d never seen the lake froze up. I’d never seen that happen before. I’d never seen the flowers die. I had never seen that happen before”. I knew it was the missing part to a song i was writing at the time.

Heaps of gratitude to Ryan and Sam of @Webr, Marcus Browne, and Jon Gillan, for their wonderful contributions in recreating this song. Bandcamp is an excellent audio streaming/hosting service for us indie artists. You can listen for free, and if you do want to support your fave artists, most of the money goes to the creators.

lyrics

UP TO PLUTO (Tom Eastland, Alexandra Eastland, Robin Eastland)

You’d never seen the lake froze up,
you’d never seen that happen before
You’d never seen the flowers die,
you’d never stared at winter
in its cold and crystal eye

We loved you up to Pluto
We loved you unto the stars
Take it, keep it, for one day
if you’re just counting cars go by

Kicking at colours in soaking wet shoes
a fistful of flowers, and a pocket full of toons

You’d never seen the plants grow back,
You’d never seen them seed
You were all full up already
You’d never had the need

You love me up to Pluto
You love me right through the stars
I take it, I hold it, so one day
if I’m just counting cars go by
I will remember
Swirling leaves and whirling winds
a lake broke open with warm spring rain
Holding you close, and peace, peace again

Now you’ve seen the lake froze up
Now you’ve felt the freeze
Now we’ve seen the flowers die
How precious is the seed

I love you up to Pluto,
I love you right through the stars
I love you like a comet
I love you right where you are
Take it, keep it, so one day
if you’re just counting cars go by
Kicking at colours, kicking at colours
Kicking at colours in soaking wet shoes,
a fistful of flowers, and a pocket full of tunes.
